The Third Annual Bath County Plein Air Festival September 28 - October 4, 2015
The Warm Springs Gallery is delighted to announce the Third Annual Bath County Plein Air Festival September 28 through October 4, 2015, celebrating the tradition of outdoor painting with some of the finest painters from Virginia and across the country. Thirty nationally acclaimed artists will set up their easels, pull out their paintbrushes and document the landscape and culture of Bath County, Virginia.
For four days artists will paint picturesque scenes throughout Bath County. Visitors and locals will have the unique opportunity to observe artists as they paint on location. Listen and learn from daily artist demonstrations. Discover the talent and techniques behind this painting tradition and become a part of our flourishing arts scene. At the end of the week, join us for a Gala Celebration and cast your vote for the best painting at the Reception and Awards Ceremony. Explore one of the most beautiful small towns in Virginia while interacting with some of the nation’s top plein air painters.
2015 Festival Judge
This year's judge and guest speaker will be Al Gury, chair of the painting department at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts. Painter, educator, writer and curator, Gury received his BA in fine arts and humanities from Saint Louis University, a Certificate of Art from PAFA, and an MFA from the University of Delaware. He is a recipient of the Cresson Traveling Fellowship and numerous grants and awards for painting and arts education, and was designated a master teacher by both The University of the Arts in Philadelphia and American Artist Magazine. His paintings have been exhibited, among other places at the National Academy of Design in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the National Capitol in Washington D.C., Washington and Lee University, the University of Pennsylvania and galleries across the country.
Gury is a contributing editor for Per Contra, The International Journal of Arts, Literature and Ideas and a contributor to a variety of publications internationally, including American Artist Magazine and Artists and Illustrators Magazine in the UK. He has written two books, one on the history of color in painting and one on the history of direct painting techniques: All Prima: A Contemporary Guide to Direct Painting and Color: It’s Traditions and Practice in Painting. He is currently writing a book on the history and practice of drawing.
